UPDATE: Driver ran through red light before crash

One woman was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after firefighters say her car hit a retaining wall, flew about 100 yards while flipping head over tail and smashed through a fence and gazebo before catching fire.

Eastbound Palmer Park was closed just west of the intersection for about three hours while crews worked to clean up the crash. The fire department ventilated the home for smoke and brought heavy rescue crews to the scene to remove the car.Graves also had a warrant for her arrest on a misdemeanor charge, according to police.Witnesses say the crash looked like the scene out of a movie with the Oldsmobile flying as high as 12 feet in the air as clothes inside flew out.Police say Graves was driving a 1997 green Oldsmobile west on Palmer Park Boulevard about 10:20 a.m. at a high rate of speed when she ran a red light at Academy Boulevard and lost control of her vehicle. It went off the south side of the road, hit a retaining wall and went airborne, according to police. The car's driver, 45-year-old Crystal Graves, was pulled from the burning car by two Colorado Springs police officers who were nearby and saw the crash. She was taken to the hospital and was in serious condition Wednesday, according to police, but is expected to survive.Smaldino said the owners had recently put up a new backyard fence and put a new roof on the gazebo."It was like playing matchbox cars at home," said witness Adam Weitzel.According to police, Graves faces multiple charges including reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia - though police say that drugs and alcohol weren't factors in the crash.Aside from the backyard damage, a window of the home was broken when the woman's purse flew out of the Oldsmobile and went through the window.

Eastbound Palmer Park was closed just west of the intersection for about three hours while crews worked to clean up the crash.

Watching the world working in the wild

On Monday 14 February, our school started to build a gazebo. The gazebo will be used for a classroom, shelter and for other school events. Pupils will use the classroom for interesting lessons such as: science, drama and reading. It is located on the grass near the main gate so that parents and passers by get a 'wow' factor when passing our school. We highlighted to the National lottery that there was no shaded area since our conservation area was fenced off, so they gave us pounds 4500 to help build it. There are also tables with parasols for packed-lunches that can also be used for shaded areas in the summer. Pupils thought about which design would be best and they decided on a 5m x 5m hexagonal gazebo as it would provide shelter from the sun, rain and wind, making playtimes more enjoyable. Our new gazebo shows that our school embraces the environment and children enjoy learning outdoors. It was finished during the half term break and took about a week to build. The whole school community will enjoy using the outdoor classroom.

I'm becoming obsessed by roll play; I HAVE THE SHEETS: Enough to build a gazebo

Byline: Denis Kilcommons

Why do I have this urge to be well stocked with a product that is hardly one of life's essentials? I have decided the roots of this passion lay in a childhood of post-war austerity and memories of torn squares of newspaper hanging on the bathroom door or, worse, a dreaded pack of Izal.So the next time I went to buy the morning papers and a pack of bacon, I marched into my local Morrisons with a grim determination that immediately crumbled as I was confronted at the entrance with the special offer. Two for pounds 3. There I was. Hooked again. And with enough rolls to build a gazebo in the back garden. As long as it doesn't rain.I mean, that just doesn't happen, does it? But then I never used to consider toilet paper as a must-have commodity, either, so perhaps it does. This has to be a sign of extreme ageing. But when did it set in? How long have I had this fetish for bathroom tissue? I mean, it's not as if I have a medical condition or anything. The very thought of Izal makes me shudder afresh. I'll be back in the shop tomorrow, looking for bargains.I WAS wandering a supermarket looking for deals on toilet rolls when I suddenly thought, what happened? When did my life change so dramatically that I had gained an obsession with the best buys on soft tissue and the need to keep the baskets in the bathroom and the downstairs loo so well stacked we could entertain a regiment of curry eaters for a month and still have supplies to spare? It used to be that top of my shopping list for the weekend would be a four pack of Tetley bitter or new underwear for the wife, but now here I was weighing up the merits of aloe vera and whether the roll was such good value that it would reach the bottom of the stairs if my dog, by some totally unfathomable reason, got the end tangled round its head.I never buy that other stuff that is advertised by an obnoxious child.

The very thought of Izal makes me shudder afresh. I'll be back in the shop tomorrow, looking for bargains.

Vets receive warm welcome decades after returning from Vietnam

Sgt. Bob Tallerdy had been warned not to wear his uniform home from Vietnam, but his Army pride wouldn't let him wear anything else.

Rose Marie Sisneros came to the event with her three granddaughters in tow, each holding a framed photo of one of Sisneros's brothers who served in Vietnam. Gilbert Sisneros served in the Navy, Angelo Sisneros in the Army and Michael Sisneros in the Marines. He and about 500 other Vietnam War veterans were greeted with a standing ovation and many thanks Friday at Fort Carson, 50 years after the first U.S. forces were deployed to Vietnam. The daylong festivities included music, food, bounce houses, and a dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Gazebo. It took 41 years, but Tallerdy got the welcome home he had been waiting for."What they do helps us get more things, more freedom," Cody said.Remembering the war too well is a problem for some veterans. Gilbert Sisneros suffers from jungle foot and his brother Angelo was affected by Agent Orange. Rose Marie Sisneros said they still have difficulty in getting the care they need. But for Tallerdy, seeing the hundreds of people who had come to show their appreciation offered him a small release.Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Bobby G. Hollingsworth, the featured speaker, said it is important that youths attended the event.Sisneros's brothers chose not to attend the event."This is a long time coming for all of us," Tallerdy said. "I would have waited another 50 years for this.""It's been great to see young boys and girls out today because your experience is something you'll remember forever," Hollingsworth said."I cried like a baby," Tallerdy said. "I never got what we got today. It made me feel real good."Tallerdy greeted the crowds with gauze-wrapped hands; he is scheduled for surgery to correct problems he says stem from contact with Agent Orange. He said he also suffers flashbacks."I never want (my granddaughters) to forget to thank them," Sisneros said. "I want them to always remember."Handing out thanks was Cody Conaty, 11. He shook as many veterans' hands as he could. When he landed at JFK Airport, with New York police officers watching, he was attacked by anti-Vietnam protesters. His uniform was ripped off his back, he said, and he later received 18 stitches in his head from injuries suffered in his "welcome"home.

"This is a long time coming for all of us," Tallerdy said. "I would have waited another 50 years for this."

Importance Of Using Outdoor Gazebos

Outdoor gazebo, if tastefully built, can enhance the aesthetics of your exteriors and it can be ideally used for outdoor recreation. The size of outdoor gazebo, however, is one of personal needs and preferences. The term outdoor gazebo can mean a lot of things for a lot of people - a pavilion, a bandstand, a summerhouse, a belvedere, or a cabana or just a shelter booth.

Outdoor gazebos can be structured in many shapes, sizes and with a variety of materials and can be set up either as a permanent structures or temporary/seasonal structures. You can buy ready-made outdoor gazebo kits from any nearby home improvement store. The kit will contain all the materials you will need to construct the outdoor gazebo - and if you find it complicated, the stores will depute a staff member to erect it for you. There are huge outdoor gazebos resembling a pavilion fit to accommodate large number of guests for elaborate parties with music and dancing. Outdoor gazebo can also be quite small suitable for small gatherings and family functions like birthday parties, wedding anniversaries etc. An outdoor gazebo can be ideally treated as a summerhouse, a place to dine al fresco or a place to relax at home with your loved ones. The roofs of most gazebos are sloped and ideally made of waterproof canvas coated with UV protection. Please bear in mind that your outdoor gazebo is a log-tern investment and it will become an integral part of your outdoor landscape that you and your guests will love.An outdoor gazebo can be built with aluminum, coated steel, vinyl, or wood - each one of these materials has its own merits and demerits and it is therefore advisable you do some personal research to ascertain which material will ideally meet your needs and preferences. Wooden gazebos are the ones favored by many when they decide on having an outdoor gazebo. The outdoor gazebos are versatile and you can use it like an outdoor living room where you can spend quality time with your family and entertain guests. Some types of gazebos are extremely lightweight and the big advantage is they are portable and you can keep shifting its location.A gazebo is normally built to serve as an open shelter with just a roof supported by a few pillars. The design should be such as to allow sunlight and air to freely pass through but nonetheless providing protection against direct sunlight and rain. Outdoor gazebos can be built at convenient exterior locations as pool cabana or garden cabana or in an ideal spot amidst the lawns or in the backyard.

Constructing an outdoor gazebo can work out a lot cheaper than buying ready-made kits and it will also endow the gazebo with a personal touch. But building the outdoor gazebo will obviously entail considerable time and energy. If a person has the time and the aptitude to undertake this type of project, it can be a rewarding experience. But in todays fast paced living style, most people discard the option of building their own gazebo and choose instead to buy the ready-to-assemble kit.

WHITE OUT

PLAN YOUR GARDEN WhIte flowers are a wonderful way to brighten up a garden. they can be quite graceful but need a dark green backdrop to contrast with the flowers to help them stand out.

Using the brightness of white will also add a sense of space, which is a useful trick for small gardens.. ?expert tip: For impact in a sunny or partially shaded wild area of the garden, combine silver stemmed birch with white- flowered foxgloves to attract bees, butterflies and birds to the area.. ?expert tip: White, when used with black, can create a very sophisticated, urban or formal look and it can be utilised creatively with other colours too, especially darker reds, blues, greens and purples to lighten the otherwise overpowering effect of these colours.ROSES yoU are bound to find at least one white-flowered rose that is just perfect for growing on a white painted wall, so select for fragrance as well as glossy green leaves. to really give your house the country cottage look, check out the rambling rose bobby James, which will quickly cover a south or north-facing wall.GAZEBO a gazebo will give the garden a peaceful, romantic theme which you can enhance with a lily pond and white dove ornaments. In a white garden choose a decorative wirework pavilion with a light covering of vines or climbing roses - it will turn even a shady grot- spot into a stylish sanctuary.Good idea TO bring out the colour and texture of white flowers, it is best to plant shrubs that bloom at the same time in groups of five or more.BIRCH the snowy white bark of the himalayan birch, betula jacquemontii, looks stunning all year round, but this is especially true on grey winter days when it really stands out in the bare garden. It's an elegant tree that looks best as a specimen in the lawn, or when grown in a group in a woodland border. For maximum interest, make the most of groundcover plants with silver, blue-toned and variegated leaves and white stems, and select larger shrubs for their form, texture and shape.. ?expert tip: When designing a white garden, choose light- coloured paving or gravel and add reflective water - you can also double the effect with a cleverly positioned mirror.AGAPANTHUS The cool, fresh tones of a white garden are an especially good choice for a contemporarystyle outdoor lounge that has an uncluttered purity at the heart of its design and features stylish, trendy blooms such as agapanthus.. ?expert tip: as with all roses, plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun and control growth by reducing the side shoots by two-thirds when flowering is finished.

Good idea TO bring out the colour and texture of white flowers, it is best to plant shrubs that bloom at the same time in groups of five or more.

For style and romance, try a WHITE OUT

PLAN YOUR GARDEN

THE cool, fresh tones of a white garden are an especially good choice for a contemporary-style outdoor lounge that has an uncluttered purity at the heart of its design and features stylish, trendy blooms such as agapanthus.Expert tip: For impact in a sunny or partially shaded wild area of the garden, combine silver stemmed birch with white-flowered foxgloves to attract bees, butterflies and birds to the area.GAZEBOSROSESA GAZEBO will give the garden a peaceful, romantic theme which you can enhance with a lily pond and white dove ornaments. In a white garden choose a decorative wirework pavilion with a light covering of vines or climbing roses - it will turn even a shady grot- spot into a stylish sanctuary.pounds How much? They can be quite graceful but need a dark green backdrop to contrast with the flowers to help them stand out.Expert tip: Place your white garden in a spot where you will see it or sit in it at night so you can enjoy it as a moon garden too. Use dependable annuals such as busy lizzies, cosmos, cleome, nicotiana, sweet alyssum and petunia in containers to draw your eye when daylight dims.Using the brightness of white will also add a sense of space, which is a useful trick for small gardens. For maximum interest, make the most of groundcover plants with silver, blue-toned and variegated leaves and white stems, and select larger shrubs for their form, texture and shape.Expert tip: as with all roses, plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun and control growth by reducing the side shoots by two- thirds when flowering is finished.YOU are bound to find at least one white-flowered rose that is just perfect for growing on a white painted wall, so select for fragrance as well as glossy green leaves. To really give your house the country cottage look, check out the rambling rose Bobby James, which will quickly cover a south or north-facing wall.TO bring out the colour and texture of white flowers, it is best to plant shrubs that bloom at the same time in groups of five or more.THE snowy white bark of the himalay jacquemontii, looks stunning all year ryan birch, Betula round, but this is especially true on grey winter days when it really stands out in the bare garden. It's an elegant tree that looks best as a specimen in the lawn, or when grown in a group in a woodland border.

CHILD'S PLAY

THROWING a party for children can be enjoyable and stress-free - it just takes some planning and a little imagination.

Kids love to dress up and having a theme makes it much easier to tailor entertainment, decorations, food and music. It doesn't have to be a costly superhero or a fairy costume: choose a colour - everyone wears something pink or blue - or an accessory, such as a hat.TIMINGFor me, the most important part of any children's party is the food. I just adore watching the kids getting stuck into some homemade goodies - even if they do make a mess!ENTERTAINMENTGot a decent-sized garden? It makes sense to use it for your gathering but if you're worried that it might rain, buy or borrow a gazebo.THE MENUDecorate it with bunting and you could even give it "walls" by hanging old sheets from the corners. If you don't have the space yourself, target a local park or woods where you can take a picnic rug, cool bags full of goodies to eat and outdoor games, although it's worth checking to see if you're allowed to bring a gazebo.Think carefully about the length of your party - children have very short attention spans and get tired very easily. An hour-and-a- half to two hours of excitement is therefore enough for any little one - plus, parents will easily be able to stay and enjoy the fun. Weekend parties work best for the whole family.THEMESDECORATIONSBut they shouldn't cost the earth. One of my favourite ideas is to make a personalised birthday banner - all you need is some old wallpaper and felt-tips pens. Another winner, which actually serves two purposes, is to buy a white paper tablecloth and get the children to decorate it while they wait for their food - it will keep them busy!Just pour the mixture into some novelty cup cake cases, bake and decorate with chocolate icing and a scattering of Smarties. It couldn't be any simpler. Chocolate fudge is another of my all-time favourites and is so easy to make as the recipe uses just four ingredients.I use the recipe on the left as it creates a delicious moist texture thanks to the condensed milk.So here are my top tips for holding the perfect children's party - try them out, you never know... you might even have a bit of fun yourself!Smartie chocolate cupcakes are a great alternative to a traditional birthday cake and can be made in no time at all.For older children, from five to 11, plan some sort of activity like ice-skating, bowling or the cinema - many places can cater for children's parties which will take away some of the stress. What you decide to play will depend on how old they are. For younger children, aged between three to five, try arts and crafts such as drawing, colouring and making hats. It never fails to amaze me how much fun children can have if you provide them with coloured tissue and paper, felt-tip pens, paints or glitter. It's a very simple idea but it's a winner.Another trick to a successful children's party is to make sure the kids are occupied, engaged and having fun all the time.My top tip, and I can't stress this enough, is to keep things simple and prepare in advance. Finger foods such as sandwiches, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, sausage rolls and pieces of fruit go down a treat - children find them really easy to eat and they can be prepared in minutes the night before. The secret ingredient is the condensed milk for the ultimate melt- in-the-mouth result- no one will believe it's home made. The fudge makes an ideal filler for the all-important party bag. What's great about both recipes is that you can get the children involved in the decoration stages - they'll love telling their party guests that they made the sweet treats them selves! And, of course, no party is complete without balloons - a cheap and cheerful way of jazzing up any venue. For younger children (up to 10 years old), it's always nice to have a themed party.LOCATIONRemember 10 - 20 minutes of musical chairs is enough, so draw up a schedule of games and make sure you have all you need to play them, including suitable music, chairs, wrapped pressies for pass the parcel and so on.Try to give yourself as much notice as possible for prepping.
